AFC Bournemouth’s School of Excellence
explains all to the BYFL
On Thursday 30th November Rob Baughan & myself (Alan) attended a presentation arranged by the B.Y.F.L. & given by Derek Old on the A.F.C.Bournemouth Centre of Excellence.
He explained what the Centre was about & for :-
- The Centres mission statement which identifies the players as the focal point of the centre & that they endeavour to provide a programme to produce excellence in key areas of technique, tactics, mental & physiological fitness.
- The age groups from under 8s (training only) then under 9s up to under 16s & the youth team under 18s
- Under 8s to under 12 must live within 60 minutes & under 13 to 16 within 90 minutes travelling time of the centre & training times U 9s to U 11s 3 hours (2 sessions) U 12s to U 16s 5 hours (3 sessions) & between August - May the centre work with players every day of the week with matches on Saturday & Sunday
- Matches are played in the South West Conference against Bristol, Plymouth, Swindon, Cheltenham & Swansea (x3) also some friendlies.
- Medical provision is avalible including a medical clinic & a training & fitness testing at David English Sports Centre
- Communication via a weekly newsletter & e-mail (this seems to be an area that is poor)
- Staffing 3 full time and 22 part time coaches 4 physios a fitness coach & a child protection officer
- Player Assessments are done on a number of pre-arranged dates during the season
- Rules & Regulations. This was a very contentious subject as some times it seems they have not always been adhered to with more than the allowed number of players being taken on from one side, also teams not being informed of their players being scouted as well as a few other problems.
One thing that was mentioned was the size of players even the younger ones & this seems to be a major consideration when choosing trialist & not just their ability
which you would think was the only reason to choose boys.
Another thing most agreed on was that in an ideal world players should not be trialed untill they are 10 or 11 but as all clubs do A.F.C.Bournemouth must as they would miss out to other clubs.
It was a very interesting evening with some quite uncomfortable questions being put to Mr Old who did well to deal with them.
