Sunday saw the first match for the young Swans in well over a month. The young guns took to the field at home to Rossgarth in the reverse fixture of the first game of the season. Co-managers Jim and Rob were dealt early blows when both Michael and Matthew called off with illness. New signing George was also unavailable to make his debut. After a quick managers meeting, the young guns entered the match with Jake L taking the goalkeeping duties. This match also saw the debut of Louie who partnered Danny up front in a change of formation designed to increase the goal threat for the young Swans. Drew and Bradley again were paired in midfield, with the defensive duo of Callum and William. Substitutes for the game were, JJ and Mitch.
The young guns started brightly, immediately taking the game to their opponents. Rossgarth had no answer to the powering runs from Drew as time after time he danced his way through for shots on goal only to be thwarted by a combination of brilliant goalkeeping and poor finishing. It wasn’t long before Drew did find the net to score the first Swans goal of 2007. 1-0
Rossgarth barely got over the half way line and when they did, William and Callum were in position to make the crucial challenges. Super striker Danny then got on the end of pass from Bradley and coolly slipped the ball passed the keeper for 2-0 The first half finished with Rossgath winning several corners as the young Swans visibly tired. However just before half-time Drew slotted home his second of the game to make the score 3-0. He was immediately subbed to take a well deserved rest.  H-T Swans 3 Rossgarth 0
Tactical changes were made at half time most notably Callum taking over goalkeeping duties and Jake taking up his position up front. Bradley took over from Callum in defence. Rossgarth had more of the ball in the second half, and began to threaten the home goal. Some desperate but well timed tackles from Mitch prevented Rossgarth from gaining a foothold in the game.  However midway through the second half a Rossgarth breakaway saw the away side score a well deserved goal. 3-1. Substitutions on both sides came thick and fast. The young guns were clearly tired in the second half, although powerful runs from both Louie and Jake L still failed to provide that elusive fourth goal. With minutes to spare the Swans won a free kick outside the away penalty box and Drew smashed an unstoppable left foot shot into the corner of the net. Full Time 4-1, Scorers: Drew Campbell (3), Danny Rickman; MOM Louie Hurle
Jim and Rob were pleased with the efforts of the Young Guns this week who clearly suffered from lack of matches. Some great defending and tackling from Mitch, Callum and William in all areas of the pitch. As usual Drew and Bradley controlled the midfield area along with a great debut from Louie. Danny’s tireless efforts were again rewarded with another goal, Jake L again put in a powerful display which was only missing a first goal for the team. JJ was outstanding having to fill various positions on the pitch as the substitutions came thick and fast.
Under 8’s
This week the U8’s were up against Kingswood, a good side riding high in the league. The match had been rearranged to be played at Roko in Kinson instead of their home pitch at Ferndown due to waterlogged pitches.
At least the rain had held off but it was a very windy day with the Swans playing against the wind in the 1st half. From the whistle the Swans put together some lovely passes between Jack, Corey, Zac and Jamie, side stepping the Kingswood defence with a nice one two, Jack getting on the end to blast the ball past the Kingswood keeper, what a start!! The Swans again pushed forward passing the ball well and forcing the keeper to make a good save. Kingswood looked to be waking up and attacked the Swans goal but Ryan and Jaya held fast clearing the ball out of play. Kingswood again pushed forward shooting but Dexter made a good stop, this was good pressure by Kingswood. The Swans tried to push forward but were finding it hard to get past a big Kingswood defence. Kingswood retaliated this time the swans failing to close down their players and Kingswood slotting home the equaliser. The swans got caught out again but some desperate defending by Ryan forced the ball out for a corner, the ball whipped in Dexter clearing but straight to a kingswood player who seemed to have all the time in the world due to no Swans players closing him down enabling him to score Kingswoods 2nd. Corey linked well with Zac and Jack making a good run but again Kingswood defence were able to clear the ball. The 1st half finished 2-1 kingswood.
The 2nd half opened to disaster with Kingswood scoring an early 3rd again the Swans not closing down their players, the Swans rallied but just couldn’t break down the Kingswood defence and when they did their keeper making a couple of good saves. This was good end to end stuff the Swans passing and moving the ball well but unable to score due to some good defending by Kingswood. Kingswood looked good on the break also passing the ball well, Rhys on now for a tired Jamie gifting Kingswood their 4th with a poor back pass. Jordan also now on for Jaya and up front couldn’t contain the ball and with Jack and Corey pushing forward looking for a goal Kingswood soon got their 5th. Soon after that Kingswood scored a 6th again due to poor closing down of the player, something to take to the training ground. The Swans were finishing strongley which was encouraging and were unlucky not to score with Corey just putting his shot wide from distance. The game finshed Kingswood 6 Swans 1. MOM going to Jack for great covering of the pitch.
Although the score line was dissapointing both Richard and Alan were encouraged by the Swans passing and moving of the ball, against a good Kingswood side. Also what is encouraging is to see how well the new boys are coming on since the begining of the season, these boys are about a year behind in match play and training compaired to alot of the boys and are developing well. The down side of todays game was the ball watching and failure to close down the opposition, so guys guess what we’ll be working on at training!!
